Frequently asked questions
DTC growth has exploded in recent years as brands have embraced the direct-to-consumer model. This shift has been driven by a number of factors, including the rise of ecommerce, the increasing importance of digital marketing, and the desire of consumers for a more personalised shopping experience.
What is D2C?
The D2C or Direct To Consumer model “cuts out” the middleman and gives the brand a direct relationship with the consumer. This is different to an online retail model where products are still distributed or sold via a third-party. In a D2C business model, a brand manufactures its products and sells directly to consumers from their own e-commerce website. Whereas, a more traditional retailer goes from a manufacturer to a wholesaler, to a retailer which then sells to the consumer. A D2C strategy allows a brand to have complete control over the marketing funnel, consumer journey and consumer data.
Growth during the pandemic
Amid the COVID-19 crisis, unforeseen growth occurred in the digital and ecommerce sectors. The trend seen during the pandemic is likely to be sustained during the recovery and continue to rise in the future. Often out of necessity, many brands were forced to pivot their business strategies as a result. As brands began to shift online, ecommerce platforms like Shopify saw a boom in users with an increase of 67% of monthly recurring revenue (MRR). A seismic shift in consumer decision-making processes has meant that D2C solutions pose less risk for brands and have become viable for most business sectors.
Subscriptions
It’s estimated 75% of DTC brands are also subscription services.
